Youth Mental Health Day: Self Care Tips

Youth Mental Health Day encourages understanding and discussion of mental health in young people, enabling them to live happy and healthy lives all year round! Each year, the day aims to get young people, and those who support them, talking about how to improve mental health! We think that this is SUPER important so we wanted to share our self care tips for kids. Self care is when you take time to do things that make your mind and body feel calm and happy. By taking care of yourself often, you are better able to cope with stress or other feelings that you may experience!

Take a break

Your little one may have a lot going on in their life like school, homework, chores, clubs etc. It can be helpful to try making their schedule a little lighter by taking a little break (if they can!) from certain stressful activities.

Do your favourite things!

Sometimes when we get too busy, we stop doing things that make us feel happy! Make them write a list of hobbies and activities that they enjoy doing that they haven’t been able to do in a while. Make a plan to do the things on their list soon!

Mindfulness Glitter Jar

Get creative with this fun activity here by making a glitter jar. This can help little ones understand what it feels like to be overwhelmed.

Learn to relax

Take some time to do something that relaxes them and calms their mind and body. This might mean turning off electronics and going for a walk. Maybe some calming music can help too or even just a lovely cuddle!

Take care of your body

The healthier you/they are, the easier it’ll be to cope with stress and negative feelings. Sleep is such an important part of their wellbeing so, making sure that you’re all getting enough sleep at night will help. Have a run around and play and make sure that you’re all eating lovely healthy meals too! Here are some of our favourite healthy snacks for you to look at too.

Growth Mindset Tips

Have a look at our free printable here. If we can change the way we are saying things, this has a much more positive impact and helps us deal with things a lot easier!

Be around people you LOVE!

Surround you and your little one with people that make you HAPPY! Self care includes staying away from people that might stress you out or cause you to feel anxious, sad or upset too. You’ll be amazed how much your children pick up on your feelings too so make sure you’re surrounding yourself with happiness.

Share your feelings

It is helpful to find someone that they can talk about their feelings with often. A friend, parent or maybe even their teacher? Talking about your feelings is a healthy way of coping and can make you all feel so much happier!

We hope that this helps and remember, if you’re struggling with your mental health, please contact The Samaritans on 116 123. Or, you can contact YoungMinds if you’re a young person by texting YM to 85258. Do not suffer alone.
