5 top tips: How to Protect Your Children from Covid-19

5 Top Tips

We’re all flooded with articles about the global Corona Virus outbreak and, as a parent or carer, it can be hard to know where to begin. Here are 5 top tips to protect children from corona virus.

1. Kids should wash their hands frequently

This one is hard to police when the children aren’t at home, but creating a healthy attitude towards handwashing is essential, and hopefully they will carry this knowledge with them. Children should be advised to wash their hands when they come home from school or an outing, and in particular before eating. Take the opportunity to practice good hand-washing techniques for at least 20 seconds (or the amount of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice). Check out the NHS website for more guidance on good hand washing.

2. Kids should be reminded not touch their eyes, mouth and nose

Explain to your kids that germs and viruses can get into their body through their eyes, nose and mouth. You don’t want to freak them out so do reassure them that simply avoiding touching their face is the best way to prevent this. Some face-touching is bound to happen so keep reverting to the Wash Your Hands rule whenever you can.

3. Kids should follow healthy respiratory hygiene

Tell your kids that Coronavirus (and all colds and ‘flu) can be spread through coughs and sneezes. Show them that when they cough or sneeze, they should always cover their mouth and nose either with a bent elbow or tissue. If using a tissue, this then needs to be thrown away immediately. If they do sneeze or cough into their hands, it is essential that they wash them afterwards.

4. Kids should avoid close contact with people who are unwell

As it’s not always possible for us to determine whether someone is infected with Coronavirus or not, it is best to avoid bringing your children into contact with people who appear to be unwell for example those who may be coughing, sneezing or having a fever.

5. Talk about it

Kids often pick up on news, conversations and feelings about big subjects without us knowing it. Be sure to talk honestly and clearly to your child so that they understand the facts and can play a part in keeping themselves safe.
