World WellBeing Week | National Sunglasses Day

World WellBeing Week is a great time to think about all the ways in which we can promote wellness in our own families, from the emotional to the physical and everything in between. Each day this week, the team at Banjo HQ are focussing on  wellbeing theme which might be helpful for you and your little ones.

Today we’re thinking about the sun and how much it can help with our mental wellbeing. We could all do with a good summer! When the sunshine does hit, it can do wonders for our mood, increase our essential vitamin D levels and help to reduce stress. In fact, a lack of sunshine can lead to a dip in serotonin – our brilliant happiness hormone.

In celebration of National Sunglasses Day, here are our top tips for making the most out of the warmer weather for you and your little ones.

  1. Overexposure to rays can cause skin cancers so reapply your sunscreen regularly (especially when in and out of the paddling pool!) and use a minimum of SPF30 at all times. Some of our favourite sun creams for little ones include a great all-rounder by Ultrasun, the range by Green People which is suitable for sensitive skin and the more budget-friendly Soltan range from Boots which includes handy handbag sizes and roll-on versions too.
  1. Stay in a shaded area when the sun is at its strongest in the middle of the day and invest in a hat! We love this look from Marks and Sparks or this slice of reversible flamingo joy from John Lewis. And you can’t go wrong with this hat for super sun protection for little kids. Got a funky toddler? Check out this gorgeous hat from Banjo HQ faves, Indikidual, too!
  1. Stick on some sunnies! Eyes need protection from UV rays too! Your sunglasses’ lenses should offer complete protection from UVA and UVB rays and for kids it’s best to aim for shatter-resistant lenses and strong, flexible frames. Check out these robust and funky designs from Nooz, or how about these wraparound, polarised glasses for younger ones from Polarn O. Pyret? Suneez pride themselves on making virtually unbreakable glasses and have frames to suit every taste.  Boots has a good range for all budgets too.

Don’t forget to get the kids a nice glasses case to keep them in too – far easier to keep track of them and ensure they don’t get sat on that way! Check these sturdy cases out or visit Sass & Belle for a great selection of designs.

  1. Staying hydrated is essential in warmer weather. Avoid plastic waste by investing in a reusable water bottle, and consider popping it in the freezer for a few hours before going out so that it’s super cold all day. Some of our favourites brands include CamelBakOne Green Bottle and Smiggle

Healthy ice lollies are another great way to keep cool, check out these lovely recipes

So, pack away your Big Coat, dust off your shades and get stuck in.

Hopefully these tips and  insights will help you and your little ones enjoy the sun this World WellBeing Week and remember, if you’re struggling with your mental health, please contact The Samaritans on 116 123. Or, you can contact YoungMinds if you’re a young person by texting YM to 85258. Do not suffer alone.

Happy National Sunglasses Day everyone! Love, Banjo HQ x
